Dr. King persistently challenged himself and others to answer the question “What are you doing for others?” A good answer to that question is “Serving as a volunteer on the Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day of Service.” On Monday, January 20, you can assist the homeless, veterans, or military families; you can visit a community center to talk to seniors and kids about making healthy food choices; you can help plant trees in your community; or you can do one of dozens of other activities to serve your neighbors and community.

The 15th Anniversary of the groundbreaking Supreme Court decision in Olmstead v. L.C. is coming up this June. To commemorate the anniversary, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is planning to develop a short compilation video highlighting individuals with disabilities who have benefited from Olmstead. DOJ is seeking video profiles for use in the compilation video. Instructions for submitting a video are as follows: DOJ will review all videos received by March 31, 2014, and will include portions of some of the videos we receive in the final video compilation.

Administration for Community Living Administrator Kathy Greenlee announces the appointment of Aaron Bishop as Commissioner, Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AIDD). Bishop has been serving as Acting Commissioner since November, 2013, when his predecessor, Sharon Lewis, took on the roles of deputy administrator of ACL and disability policy advisor to Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.

Excellent health care—including mental health care—contributes to quality of life of nursing home residents. This webinar series presents information to build understanding of the psychosocial concerns of residents and how nursing home staff members can recognize and help to address those needs. The series is targeted to nursing home social workers, although all long-term care staff members and advocates are welcome.
