World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Resources and Upcoming EJCC Meeting

April 23, 2024

Every year on June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) provides an opportunity for all of us to promote dialogue and action on the issue of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Below, we have compiled some of the many upcoming events, activities, and resources available to help you be a part of WEAAD and the movement for elder justice.

Notably, an Elder Justice Coordinating Council (EJCC) meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at 10:00 AM ET. The EJCC was established by the Elder Justice Act and is comprised of 17 federal departments and agencies to coordinate activities related to elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation across the federal government. The June 2024 meeting will celebrate the first 10 years of EJCC accomplishments and lay out the plan for the Council’s next decade of elder justice commitments. Stay tuned for more information and details on registration.

The ACL-funded National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) has a variety of tools and resources to help you get involved including outreach guides and fact sheets. Here are some ways you can participate:

  • Raise awareness on social media using #WEAAD. The WEAAD social media guide has sample messages and graphics in English and Spanish. You also can join the #WEAAD615 challenge to share facts about elder abuse, commit to an action, and encourage your friends to join you.
  • Participate in the Finish the Sentence campaign and tell us how you think people of all ages can advance elder justice. Simply download and print the template (available in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean) and finish the sentence (“Everyone at every age can stand up to elder abuse by…”). Then share a photo with your sentence and start a conversation.
  • Attend a virtual or in-person WEAAD events. (And make sure you let us know about any events you or your organization are hosting.)
  • Join the virtual Walk for WEAAD to stay moving while raising awareness about elder justice.
