2014 Webinar Series on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias

The Administration for Community Living (ACL), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are collaborating to host a webinar series to increase knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and resources that professionals in the public health, aging services and research networks can use to inform, educate and empower community members, people with dementia and their family caregivers.

The webinars have reached registration capacity. Please send a message to adear@nia.nih.gov in order to receive an email when the audio recording, transcript and presentation slides are posted on-line, generally within 2 weeks after the live webinar. New to this year's series, we have applied for continuing education (CE). Free CE for each webinar will be available for up to 2 years after the live webinar. Each webinar is from 1:30–3:00 pm Eastern / 12:30–2:00 pm Central / 11:30 am–1:00 pm Mountain / 10:30 am–12:00 pm Pacific. The schedule is as follows:

Join the first webinar in this series to learn the latest resource information on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, including:

  • How the federal government is implementing the National Alzheimer’s Plan, including the overall direction of the plan and its 2014 changes

  • Existing and new consumer resources on dementia, including the 24/7 National Alzheimer’s Call Center, the Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Referral Center, research registries, and brain health materials

  • Resources for caregivers of people with dementia, who care for loved ones experiencing a progressively debilitating illness, and for service providers who help both populations

The second webinar in the series will describe community initiatives and public-private partnerships to develop and implement Alzheimer’s disease plans, dementia-capability efforts, and dementia-friendly communities and access resources for starting initiatives in their states and communities. Three individuals representing model state and community collaborations will discuss:

  • Their connection to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease

  • Secrets to their collaboration successes

  • How they are helping individuals, families and professionals access research, education, training and support services

The final webinar in this year’s series will provide updates on existing Alzheimer’s and related dementias research studies, as well as information on new directions, including:

  • Research participation insights, such as new directions in translational Alzheimer’s research, reaching African American audiences with participation messages, gender differences, and potential hormone therapies

  • Metabolic aspects of Alzheimer’s, including roles of insulin and exercise

  • Research findings on non-pharmacologic approaches to dementia care, such as improving caregiver quality of life

  • Recruiting Older Adults into Research (ROAR), a collaboration among ACL, CDC, NIA to inform older adults of research participation opportunities
