11th Annual NYC Elder Abuse: Conference Promoting Awareness + Taking Action

Event Description:
About the Conference Wednesday, June 15, 2016800am 400pmThe New School66West 12th StreetNYC between 5th and 6th AvenuesFor information visit httpbit.ly22dAYMx or contact pressjasa.orgThe June 15 conference will address a wide range of topics including the role of the courts and the challenges of prosecuting elder abuse cases identifying suicide risk factors for victims of elder abuse and identifying and addressing types of mortgage and real estate scams that target older homeowners and working with elder abuse victims who suffer from dementia. JASA is a lead sponsor of the conference. For nearly 20 years, JASA, one of New Yorks largest and most trusted agencies serving more than 43,000 older adults in the New York metropolitan area each year, has helped thousands of victims and their families, raised awareness about the issue, and ensured that professionals who serve the senior community are well-equipped to identify abuse and assist the most vulnerable and isolated older adults. And with New Yorks older adult population projected to rise 44.2 percent by 2030, the need for education on this topic grows more urgent every day. One of the highest profile cases in New York history was that of socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor, whose grandson Philip C. Marshall brought the horrendous abuse to light resulting in a lawsuit against his own father. Mr. Marshall, who has now dedicated his life to raising awareness about elder abuse and elder-justice, will deliver the keynote address.

Elder abuse happens far too often to our loved ones across South Dakota and the nation, said Jackley. Last summer the South Dakota Elder Abuse Task Force worked tirelessly to advocate for senior rights and to find ways to better protect them from financial exploitation and physical abuse. The Task Force strived to provide our seniors and their loved ones a place to go for help, and that place is now the Attorney Generals Office with its elder abuse subdivision. As a part of Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Jackley recognizes the Legislatures creation of two new positions to combat elder abuse and financial exploitation. The positions were created based on the recommendations of the Elder Abuse Task Force to the South Dakota Legislature during the legislative session earlier this year. The positions include a prosecutor and an investigator. As part of the program, public outreach to senior centers, assisted living centers, senior clubs, civic organizations and other locations will be used to help seniors better protect themselves and provide them with the tools to recognize and report abuse. For more information on Elder Abuse and Financial Exploitation please visit the South Dakota Attorney Generals website at httpatg.sd.govSeniorsAbuse.aspx. If you are interested in a seminar presentation in your area, please contact the Office of South Dakota Attorney General at 605 773-3215. Letter to the Editor

Event Description:
The New Jerseys Long Term Care Ombudsman James W. McCracken marketed a letter to the editor to the major daily newspapers in the state around the WEAAD. The letter was a call to action for individuals concerned about elder abuse to join the Ombudsmans Volunteer Advocate Program. The New Jersey Ombudsmans program has grown by 43 percent in the last five years, and currently has nearly 240 highly trained volunteer advocates placed in NJ nursing homes. The text of the letter to the editor Dear EditorWednesday, June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It is a day when we recognize the sad and unavoidable fact that every day across the country and in our own community, vulnerable elderly people are being abused, neglected and financially exploited. And, make no mistake, this is happening right here in your community. It happens to elderly individuals living in their own homes, with family and even to those who are living in a long-term care community. As New Jerseys Long Term Care Ombudsman, I oversee a state- and federally-funded program that advocates for elderly people living in long-term care facilities, like nursing homes and assisted living residences. The unfortunate reality is that anywhere you have extremely vulnerable people, there is the potential for serious abuse. That is why I urge anyone who is truly concerned about elder abuse and exploitation to call my office at 609-826-5053 to find out about how to become a Volunteer Advocate in a local nursing home.Volunteer Advocates receive 32 hours of training and asked to spend four hours a week at a local nursing home, listening to residents concerns and advocating on their behalf. If you are interested in having a direct impact on the lives of elderly citizens in nursing homes, please consider becoming a Volunteer Advocate.James W. We hav e a unique display of 15 life size silhouettes of an aging man hunched over a cane. 14 of the silhouettes are painted in gray and in the background while the one in front is painted bright purple. This represents that approximately 14 of 15 cases all abuse cases are not reported. A large photo of theses MEN appeared with the front page story which also covered more facts about the silent epidemic.

Celebrating its first anniversary, the Center for Elder Abuse Awareness is teaming up with Senior Power Days on Belle Isle to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is June 15 globally to bring light to the silent epidemic of elder abuse. Although 1 in 24 older adults are victims of elder abuse, neglect or abandonment, few report their troubles. Elder abuse costs our nation 2 billion every year and puts victims at high risk of premature death from abuse and neglect.Last year, Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit, created the Center for Elder Abuse Awareness and opened the only Elder Abuse Emergency Shelter in SE Michigan.Funded by an initial 25,000 grant The last grant was for 140K from Gov. Rick Snyders Say No to Elder Adult Abuse campaign through MichigansAging and Adult Services Agency, this shelter-without-walls brings together nonprofit agencies in a collaborative effort to protect older adults. We now also have funding through Oakland county for Oakland Co residents.Victims can seek refuge in one of three JSL communities for as long as 90 days while social workers aid in resolving abusive situations and creating safe transitions to return home safely. We are dedicated to ensuring that every older adult in SE Michigan is safe and cared-for, says Megan Mirza, Center Director. We must put an end to older abuse neglect and abuse, says Barbra Giles, LMSW, ACSW, JSLs Associate Director of Aging Services. Our goal is to provide support, safe harbor and security for the most vulnerable among us.Services and shelter are provided to victims at no charge. Assisted living, independent living and skilled nursing situations are available. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Event ScheduleSpeakers, including Gov. Rick Snyder, will begin at 930 a.m., to be followed by a boxed lunch picnic and sand art mural for the community to create that will be featured on Belle Isle thereafter as a permanent art piece.About the Center for Elder Abuse Awareness at Jewish Senior LifeThe Center for Elder Abuse Awareness was created in 2015 by Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit, , to educate, empower and protect older adults in Southeastern Michigan.
